The 10% Rule for Preventing Running Injuries

Running is a great sport that can help to build bone density, improve heart health, maintain a healthy weight, and even boost your mood. However, running has one main drawback – it can increase your risk of developing various foot and ankle injuries. Most running injuries are caused by overuse, when excessive pressure is placed on the feet repetitively, damaging the muscles, ligaments, tendons, joints, or bones that make running possible. The risk of injury can be reduced by following something known as the 10% Rule. This simple rule states that if you are increasing the amount of miles you run, you should increase this number gradually, by no more than 10% each week. For example, if you ran 15 miles this week and would like to run even more next week, you should only add 1.5 miles to your mileage total. That is, the following week, you should run no more than 16.5 miles. Increasing your mileage gradually allows your body to get used to the higher demands being placed on it and makes overuse injuries less likely. How Do Stress Fractures Form?

Stress fractures are thin, tiny cracks in a bone. They occur when a bone is unable to bear the load or stress placed on it. Your bones, like any other part of your body, are living tissues that are constantly rebuilding and repairing themselves in response to the loads placed on them. What Is Peripheral Neuropathy?

Peripheral neuropathy is nerve damage within the peripheral nervous system, which communicates with the central nervous system (involving the brain and spinal cord). Diabetes often causes peripheral neuropathy, however, it can also occur due to genetics, infections, injuries, hormonal imbalances, or other medical conditions. Peripheral neuropathy may cause numbness, weakness, muscle twitching or cramps, changes in nails, skin and hair, and a pins-and-needles sensation in the legs and feet. It may also be difficult to maintain balance or feel changes in temperature or pain, and you may experience disturbances in your emotions and sleep patterns. What Is Neuropathy?

Symptoms of Neuropathy Include:

Treatment

To treat neuropathy in the foot, podiatrists will first diagnose the cause of the neuropathy. Figuring out the underlying cause of the neuropathy will allow the podiatrist to prescribe the best treatment, whether it be caused by diabetes, toxic substance exposure, infection, etc. If the nerve has not died, then it’s possible that sensation may be able to return to the foot.

Pain medication may be issued for pain. Electrical nerve stimulation can be used to stimulate nerves. If the neuropathy is caused from pressure on the nerves, then surgery may be necessary.
